Day Care

Grrr - for some weird reason Blogger ate one of my posts. Or at least failed to publish it. Now I'm looking like the derelict, not-even-weekly blogger!

I'm starting to freak a little about childcare for LM. There don't really seem to be any daycares in my new area (although admittedly, I haven't looked very hard), and there are some downtown but they are crazy hard to get into (read: you need to put your bébé on that waitlist before the pregnancy pee stick dries). I don't see any real advantage in having a kid in daycare that's not where I live or work, so nanny sharing seems like a good option. Now I just need to find a family in my area who wants to share.

I guess I should just put an ad on Craig's List or something but that just seems like a sketch-o-rama way to find childcare. I mean the people I've advertised to before can't even be bothered to show up and pay for the $20 bookshelves they swore they wanted over the phone, and I'm going to ask them to help me figure out daycare? Blah.

I assume Nanny sharing is splitting a nanny with another family? Do elaborate! And yes, I always have wondered how in the world you find competent, qualified nannies

Your comment about the pee stick is not much of an hyperbole! In Toronto, we signed up with a downtown daycare centre when my wife was 2 months pregnant (in Feb, 08) and they couldn't guarantee a spot before April 09!

This is a huge problem. I have friends who leave their kids with a small private "daycare" (basically just a woman at home who took a two-week course) for 2 days a week. They pay $1500 per month! For ~8 days of care!! Jeepers.

You can go through a Nanny-finding service. They have a bit of an up front cost, but at least they (usually) do criminal background checks and such.

When I worked as a nanny, I found the family I worked for through our neighborhood email listserve. If your community has something like that, it is worth a shot. But yes, I agree Craigslist attracts an extra-sketchy crowd, and is mostly good for entertaining yourself by reading hilarious personal ads.

I'm just hoping that by the time I have kids, the kids I nannied will be old enough to take care of my kids, and so the cycle will continue. :)

I don't know if there are any good dayhomes in your area, but that has become a big thing here that seems to be better than daycare if you can find someone that you trust and really like. A few of my friends have done it and are fantastic. I know you will find something!

Hi - I have nannied for 4 different families during high school and college, and I found 3 of them through craigslist - they all ended up being amazing experiences and i am still really close to all the families even years later. I think it is possible to find someone good, just involves some legwork on your part to really look at their resume and call and research all their references. I'd also recommend looking up their references in the phone book and making sure the numbers match - I've heard of people "referring" people to their friends, siblings etc.

Another trick I would suggest (and how I found my other family) is to contact a professor at a local college that teaches something relevant, like education or juvenile occupational therapy or something, and ask them to recommend a couple of students for you to interview. This is especially good if you are in school too or have a flexible schedule, because it is likely that you'll be able to sync your schedule with another students.
